Artist Statement:
Somos, a Spanish word that means, “We are,” is a series of portraits featuring nine diverse Agnes Scott College students and their personal narratives. The title is a bold declaration reflecting the themes of solidarity, inclusivity and identity to inspire students and reflect the leadership, service and community of the Agnes Scott students featured. Cambrón used students’ faces and stories in their own words—a very real, tangible example of what students can aspire to become.
Cambrón conducted one-on-one conversations with each of the students in order to hear their stories and learn how their identities and lived experiences informed each student's service and leadership. With inclusivity as the goal, she chose to represent a diverse group of individuals so that the viewer that interacts with the portraits may find multiple ways to connect.
Thin, exquisite lines are layered with bold, heavy lines in each portrait to convey the complexity of each person’s story—the collective power that is informed by the vulnerability of their individual narratives. The text from their stories surround their faces in an embrace and the warm tones are an invitation for the viewer to have an intimate conversation with the human being depicted before them.
